The newel post’s cap and trim band, plus the railing were stripped, stained and finished in high gloss polyurethane varnish.

Again, loose paint atop varnish required stripping.

Cracks, separated seams and paint overruns onto varnish mark the passage of eighty-nine years.

At the end of the multiple step restoration process, the painted surfaces were finished in semigloss alkyd base enamel, the treads in high gloss polyurethane varnish.
