Example 2 - 1991 Restoration of 1935 Construction.

While undeniably aesthetically pleasing, such salt box configuration lacks the protection of overhanging eaves. On the other hand, construction is notably robust. The ten inch straight grained, old growth cedar siding measures one inch on the butts. The windows are the traditional double sliding sash units with thick, well pitched fir sills.

(1) This south wall section typifies the futility of spot paint removal. The most recently applied paint is quite sound. However the underlying coatings have lost their adhesion to the siding.
(2) Window on the lower south wall. Again underlying coatings are separating behind the top coat.
(3) 2006 There are insipient separations at the juncture of glass and window putty. Otherwise aside from soilage the fifteen year old work is sound.

(4) Stripped, sanded and ready for priming. For maximum adhesion the primer should soak down into the upbraided wood’s surface.
(5) Even with less than optimal maintenance the fifty-seven year old wall is fundamentally sound, a testament to heavily dimensioned old growth lumber. Contemporary construction would likely fare less well.
(6) 2006 Aside from fading, after fifteen years of marine exposure the exterior envelope remains in good condition.

(7) 2006 There are now a few isolated small paint separations on the bottom edges of the siding, otherwise the work remains intact.
(8) Primed, caulked, and filled.
(9) The home’s exposure to Puget Sound.
