Example 1 - 2000 Restoration of 1918 Construction.

This home is a sterling example of past building practices that produced supremely durable residences. The wide overhanging eaves shelter each story as well as the vulnerable wooden porch floor. They are solidly supported by numerous knee braces. The well pitched roof, due to its steepness, will continue to drain adequately even past the time the roofing material is in need of replacement. The gutters hang freely from exposed rafter tails. If they become clogged they simply dump water onto the ground rather than into enclosed soffits. Finally of course the home is constructed of old growth lumber.

This home’s aesthetics require no elaboration. With only reasonable maintenance it can be admired centuries into the future.

(1) 2000 Commencement of work
(2) The exposed structure was markedly sound after eighty-two years The numerous cracks, broomed end grain, and small rot pockets were readily repairable.
(3) The separations in the joints of the tongue and groove sheeting are typical of past long neglected roof maintenance (i.e. reroofing)

(4) This siding alternates widths of four and ten inches, with ½ inch butts The wide boards are thus very thin in proportion to width.
(5) Stripped, this outside corner exhibited futile past repair attempts
(6) Stripped and primed this window bank testifies to the resilience of past window construction After eighty-two years of mostly off the mark maintenance it remained restorable.

(7) 2000 Work in progress and completion
(8) The corner was in fact repairable, just not as previously attempted
(9) 2000 Restoration completed
The window bank subsequently received additional protection from storm windows.
