Example 1 - 2001 Restoration of 1925 Construction
Colonial configuration plus the durability of old growth materials sustained this home through long years of neglect and misguided maintenance attempts. Once stripped and sanded it was clear that the structure had hardly emerged from its past unmarked. Nevertheless the whole of the original structure remained restorable. Repairs involving replacement only occurred on the much newer one story addition.

(1)
Work beginning
A number of irreparable second growth siding boards on the addition have been removed. |
|
(2)
Details of stripped and primed upper and lower sashes, west side
Deterioration stemming from unsealed joints and end grain is conspicuous. |
|
(3)
South side basement sill stripped and primed, and finished
How such chunks could have been torn away is conjectural. |

(6)
South side basement window sill-casing juncture
The vulnerability of unsealed end grain is well illustrated. Decay however was localized, and the window was repairable. Such a case involving second growth material would be most unlikely. |

(7)
South side stripped
While evidencing the usual cracks, broomed end grain, and small rot pockets, the seventy-six year old siding remained basically sound. |
|
(8)
Details of finished upper and lower sashes
Beneath the top coats tough elastic sealants now protect against further moisture intrusion. |
|
(9)
Improperly installed flashing, and replacement
Surface mounting rather than counter flashing behind the bottom course of siding is counter productive. Moisture is channeled behind the flashing and into the structure. |

Completion
Most certainly with the passage of years the blue will fade. However the inevitable fading little affects the continuing protection of the tightly bonded water resistant coating system. Perhaps on ten to fifteen year maintenance cycles the top color coats will be renewed. |
